Montval Torchon watercolor paper by Canson Infinity
I thought of using another product of Canson which is the Montval Torchon watercolor paper for a personal project. The weight of the paper is 270 gsm and it has a snowy appearance like texture. It gives a bumpy feel when touch and opens up like a pad.
Snowy surface
To test the paper I painted some scenes.

The paper suits my loose style of painting which is mostly wet into wet with minimal details. I like how the paper can handle more water and that the colors soften and blend nearly effortlessly. Adding texture is a breeze when doing dry brush. Colors can be easily lifted without bruising the paper.

I bought one of these on sale for 5 bucks, just to try it. The “snowy” texture is great for mixed media. I’ve tried markers, ink, watercolor and acrylics with the results I was looking for.

Thank you for dropping by Osvaldo. I too like the snowy texture and it creates a subtle uniqueness to my paintings. :)

This definitely is not a paper for all. One should know how to use it. I have found that this paper is really good for abstract art and I am going to buy it again.

Thank you for sharing your experience Rajan. I agree that this paper may be good for abstract because of its texture. I like your atmospheric paintings!

It’s been so many years since you wrote this post, and we still seem to be the only two artists who reviewed it! I wanted to see how others used this surface to get ideas for watercolor techniques I could try out myself. But this paper is very unpopular it seems ?
I normally paint portraits so rough grain would not be my first choice, but cold press surface started to annoy me, and hot press is hard to find in my local stores. I’ve found that Torchon actually works better for ink and dry media because the lines come out smoother than on regular Montval paper. So I thought I’d give this a try for studies, and experiment with looser painting techniques.

Hi, Nela! Thank you for your patience in waiting for my reply. Interesting you noticed that very few reviewed Montval Torchon. Yes I think this paper is lesser known. I don’t use them now and they’re not being sold in the art shops. Strange you mentioned hot press is hard to find from where you are… do you have a specific brand you’re looking for? In our art store there’s a good mix of hot and cold press though cold press is more popular than the former. Thank you for sharing what you intend to do with the Torchon. Enjoy your experiments!
